OVERVIEW
One of Spain's most celebrated wines, the 2016 Numanthia from Bodega Numanthia is a fine example of what Tinta de Toro (Tempranillo) in Toro can do and is widely regarded as the best wine from the entire Toro region. A bold, sumptuous wine with velvety tannins than can be enjoyed today but will mature gracefully in the fashion of the best Gran Reserva Riojas.
CRITIC REVIEWS
A dense, layered red with berry, chocolate and walnut character. It’s full-bodied and very luscious with power and richness, but shows some reserve and lots of polish at the end. 95 Points. James Suckling
This expressive red is marked with layers of cherry coulis, tangerine, toast and anise notes supported by full, refined tannins and details of wild herb, loamy earth and mineral. Powerful and luxurious in feel.. 93 Points. Wine Spectator
FOOD PAIRING INSPIRATION
This top end Toro will pair amazingly with Manchego cheese, lamb and pork.
VINTAGE AND WINEMAKING
2016 is regarded as an excellent vintage in Toro. The Tempranillo was hand harvested at the optimum time for each and every parcel. Fermented in stainless steel and then aged in 60% French oak for 18 months, Numanthia spends another 24 months in bottle before release.
PRODUCER NOTES
The striking Toro region is a firm favourite for those looking for value in fine wine. Bodega Numanthia sits on the banks of the River Duero, in the heart of the Spanish province of the Zamora.
Producing wines from tiny yields in the heart of the Iberian peninsula, in between the famous cities of Valladolid, Salamanca and Zamora, Bodega Numanthia has gone from a hidden gem for those in the know to cult status amongst Somms and tops the list of top Spanish restaurants around the world.
Bodega Numanthia's ancient Tinta de Toro vines, among the world’s oldest, range from 30 to over 200 years old. Sculpted by time, these pre-phylloxera vineyards of ungrafted vines have miraculously survived decades of climatic extremes, enduring harsh winters and blistering summers. They yield wines of extraordinary depth and complexity.
